My first post of 2010!

Yay! It's only taken me eight months, too! :)

OK, here's the deal- I'm writing a story, and I want some constructive criticism for it. This is just the beginning, mind you, and as all writing is re-writing, your comments are welcome.

As I looked around my room one last time, my heart jumped to my throat. 'I will not cry' I told myself, for the umpteenth time. 'I won't' But I just couldn't hold back the tears. I'd never been away from home for more than a couple days, and never without my parents. Now, I was leaving for the whole summer, 5 months away from my family and friends. ' This was your idea, you wanted this, this job will be a good thing for you.' I turned around and shut the door.

I've gone to Juniper Lake Amusement Park every summer with my family since I could walk. I love it there, and when I turned 18 and wanted a job somewhere other than the local fast-food place, I knew exactly where I wanted to go. I was so excited when I got the phone call, and I've been excited ever since, but this morning I woke up more nervous than I've ever been in my life. It finally hit me just what all this means. I'm going to be almost two hours away from my family, living in a dorm with people I don't know, working around strangers, cleaning up trash all summer. Am I really ready for this? Can I do it? I'm not really a people person, though I am a good actress, so I can cover up nervousness when I have to. Though, I do tend to talk too much when I'm nervous…

I should probably introduce myself, shouldn’t I? My name is Reagan Spangenburg. My parents have this obsession with the American Presidents, which explains my name. My brother’s name is Lincoln, and my sister is named Madison. I’m the youngest, the baby of the family. I’m also the first one to get a job away from home, if you don’t count the fact that Lincoln graduated from college this spring and has a job in Montana.

As I walked to my car I had to fight back the urge to run back to my mother’s arms. I got in my car, put in my favorite CD, and hit the road, waving at my family as I drove past the house. Soon, I was wrapped up in the music, singing along, and before I knew it, I was halfway there.

Like I said, comments are welcome. This is basically all I have at the moment, but I just started it, so there will be more.

Thanks,
Karen
